J58 Tayodhamma Jataka -- The Monkey Prince and the Ogre
[MORAL Wisdom, courage and skill]
[READABILITY Intermediate I]
In this story, the Buddha told us of how greed and anger will cause destruction to ourselves.
When the old monkey king was so full of greed and fear, he could even kill his own sons to keep his position as the king. In the end, the old monkey was killed by his own hatred. If we take what we do not deserve, we will eventually suffer for it. But, if we are like the Bodhisatta and be virtuous, wise, and forgiving, the good kamma will reward us in the end. Even when the Bodhisatta knew his father wanted to kill him, our Bodhisatta did not hate him. Even the ogre was touched by the virtues of the Bodhisatta and helped him.
