Dhammapada 119-120 Anathapindikasetthi Vatthu - The Rich Merchant and the Guardian Deity of His House v230218
[Dhamma Support Education Series]
"Even an evildoer sees happiness." -- Why did the great rich merchant, Anāthapiṇḍika, drive the guardian deity away from his house?
pāpopi passata bhadraṃ, yāva pāpaṃ na paccati;
yadā ca paccati pāpaṃ, atha pāpo pāpāni passati.
As long as the unwholesome deed has not ripened,
the evildoer will still see happiness;
But once the unwholesome deed ripens,
the evildoer will see the (bad) result of the unwholesome deed.
bhadropi passata pāpaṃ, yāva bhadraṃ na paccati;
yadā ca paccati bhadraṃ, atha bhadro bhadrāni passati.
As long as the wholesome deed has not ripened,
the good person will still see suffering;
But once the wholesome deed ripens,
the good person will see the (good) result of the wholesome deed.
